HistoryFor 20 years, the St. Joseph’s Care Foundation has worked to improve and maintain the quality of health care provided to the citizens of the Peterborough area. Opening its doors in 1986, the St. Joseph's Care Foundation got its start as the St. Joseph's General Hospital Foundation, raising funds and providing capital dollars for expansion, medical equipment and educational opportunities for Hospital staff. St. Joseph's Hospital went through many changes over the years and the Foundation kept in step, changing its name and its focus of fundraising in response. When the St. Joseph's Health Centre closed, the Foundation found that its focus was no longer dictated by the needs of the Hospital it had served. Looking to the community, the Foundation recognized an opportunity to develop support for healthy aging initiatives for the region’s seniors. Working with the Friends of Fleming Foundation, Marycrest Home for the Aged, Anson House and Sir Sandford Fleming College on the St. Joseph’s at Fleming Capital Campaign, the partnership successfully raised the $4.5 million in capital funds needed to build the state-of-the-art St. Joseph’s at Fleming long-term care facility. Officially opened in September 2005, St. Joseph’s at Fleming is a shining example of excellence in long-term care and a model for future partnerships between long-term care and education. Focused on dignity and quality of life, and featuring a strong program of multi-denominational, spiritually based, pastoral care, the new 200-bed long-term care facility is setting the standard for compassionate care and innovation. Building on the success and completion of this astounding venture and partnership, the Foundation embraced 2005 as a year of change. In addition to a move to its current Aylmer Street location, in April the Foundation officially announced its exciting new vision for community partnerships not focused solely on seniors, but on life-long healthy aging for all. While supporting St. Joseph’s at Fleming remains its primary objective, the Foundation has committed to a larger focus within the community, building partnerships that enrich the lives of all our region’s citizens. |
